About Klatch Coffee Sumatra Ketiara Free Trade Organic

This women lead co-op introduces the "Queen's Coffee" which brings flavors of cocoa, accents of sage and thyme, with a cedar aftertaste. Ketiara has become one of most recognized coffee suppliers to almost all viable coffee traders in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, Indonesia. Perhaps, Ketiara is the only women-lead cooperative in coffee trading in Indonesia. Ketiara began 20 years ago, where chairwomen Mrs. Rahmah, was purchasing cherries, processing it into green, and selling to local traders. In late 2008, she organized farmers to form a cooperative that is now made up of nearly two thousand small shareholders. Now, Ketiara has become one of best known coffee suppliers to almost all coffee traders in Medan, Indonesia and holds it’s Fair Trade and Organic Certifications. The farmers of Ketiara produce Caturra, Typica, Bourbon, and Catimor varieties using the traditional wet-hulled process of Indonesia, which means that the protective “parchment” is stripped at virtually the same time as the fruit and the still-wet beans are laid out on patios to dry out. They turn a dark green and take on “earthy” flavor notes. The coffee is then fermented, washed and carefully dried before the shell is removed.
